Mission Oakhurst Park, Part II

Today the Clean Up Klub returned to Oakhurst Park to clean up around the softball fields.  On this outing, the CuK were joined by two new friends, C and G, along with their parental support crew.

The CuK Kids gathered a couple bags of trash and four bags of recycling while the grown-ups tackled Tetanus Hill.  Among the recyclables and trash, a motley assortment of treasures were found buried in Tetanus Hill:

A lone beaded sandal
Two brake pads (for a sedan!)
A bottle filled with what I can only guess was fizzy liquid cheese
Random fist sized pieces of metal
A large plastic thingy
A pair of prescription Coach sunglasses

Stay tuned for what other buried treasures the Clean Up Klub finds.

Inauguration Day 2013

Today is Inauguration Day for the 2nd term of the 44th POTUS and also the MLK Day of Service.  Could there be a better day to launch a new project that is important to my daughter, Kesiah?  The idea of "Tikkun Olam" or "Heal the World" is important to her.  The first step she decided to take to heal the world is to start a club to combat litter locally.  This idea was born from the question "What can one little person do?" and her answer to that question is...

The Clean Up Klub

Armed with gloves and bags, the club's initial 3 members smoothly executed its inaugural mission:  to clean up Oakhurst Park and Harmony Park.  We cleaned up trash, removed broken glass, and recycled what we could.  As a bonus, she asked a local business for their bottle caps so that she can reuse them to make buttons for her club.  Hopefully, this is the first of many missions.  Hopefully, this is the first of many new members to join.  Hopefully, this is the first step of many down the road of social activism and environmental responsibility.

As the club grows we hope to:

  • Lead by example.
  • Expand membership and expand the positive impact of the club.
  • Research and educate others in ways of how one can reduce, reuse, and recycle in their daily lives.
  • Foster an encouraging and comfortable environment in which members can express their ideas and concerns.
  • Hold brainstorming sessions on how to improve, expand, and sustain positive social and environmental impact.
  • Effectively and efficiently act on those ideas and solutions provided from brainstorming sessions and those made by members.

Well, there it is.  Stay tuned to see how Kesiah's idea grows or better yet, join and make an immediate positive impact.

Congratulations Kesiah and Happy Inauguration Day!!!
